What is The Family Study about?

There is a group of people who are studying what happens when people with intellectual / developmental disabilities have major challenges or are in crisis. We would like to understand the perspectives of family members when someone in that family has a problem and gain more details about your experiences of managing crises or major challenges. If you agree to participate, you will be asked about how you and your family handle stresses, how you feel, and what kinds of services you use.

It should take about 25 minutes to complete the questions. We will use the information to help agencies support individuals with intellectual / developmental disabilities and their families.

Issues with Participation

Although there are no known problems in being part of this project, you may feel uncomfortable discussing your experiences. You can choose not to answer any questions that you do not want to answer. If you change your mind at any time, it will not affect the services that you or your family get.

Benefits

Some family members may have positive feelings from participating, from sharing their experiences, and by being able to voice their opinions. You may benefit from sharing your experiences, concerns, and ideas about how to improve services. We hope to make things better for you and others who use services in the future.

Confidentiality

Any information we collect about you is private. Only a number is used on the questionnaires, and your name is kept on a study list in a separate location. If we write or present anything about what we learn from the study, no one will know who you are from what we say. A person from the research ethics teams at CAMH may contact you in the future to ask you questions about the research study and you agreeing to be part of it.
